How to write a profile that stands out

Whether it is your resume or your profile on MyWorld, it needs to impress immediately. That is why it is so important to create a strong profile to catch the attention of potential employers and recruiters.

Elevator Pitch

Include, after your personal information in your resume and in the Skill section of your MyWorld Profile, an elevator pitch. This is a list of 5 to 8 points that will make you stand out. This needs to be punchy, so it can be read in less than 30 seconds.

Make it simple to read but include detail

Avoid making your profile too wordy, keep it simple. Use everyday language and avoid acronyms unless they are regularly used in the industry. Remember, not everyone is an expert in your field, so choose words that they can understand.

Key skills and functions

In your resume make sure you describe your key skills and also the job functions you have completed, that relate to the career path you are following. Use the available Job Classifications and Sub Classifications in the MyWorld job portal that best describe your major experiences. Do not select a Classification in which you have minimal experience. For example, if you are in Sales & Marketing and focus mainly on Business Development with little experience in Marketing, only select Business Development.

You are now in "sales"

In your MyWorld profile and resume and especially in the interview, you are selling yourself. Make sure you write your profile in a way that catches reader’s attention.

Write in the third person

Avoid using “I”, “my”, or “we” in your responsibilities.

Use bullet points

MyWorld profiles and resumes should use bullet points. Avoid long paragraphs and extended sentences as these are harder to read.

Highlight your achievements

Make your MyWorld profile stand out by listing your achievements. Give details on the results you achieved. Whenever possible, include numbers and percentages.

Be consistent across all your profiles

Employers will definitely conduct research on promising profiles across multiple online sources. Make sure that all your profiles and your resume are consistent.

Include your resume

Make sure you include your resume with your profile so employers do not need to ask for it. You can use our templates if you are struggling to find the best format.
